Patricia Velásquez
Creativity is more than the boundaries
of film, canvas, photographs and other media. It is also the catalyst for
philanthropy and charity as well as for activism. Patricia Velasquez, an
award-winning model, actress, and historian an ardent philanthropist, a fervent
activist, and also a loving mom, applies an insatiable creative energy in
everything she does whether it's in blockbusters like The Curse of La Llorona
or launching the Wayuu Taya Foundation, and serving as a member of the UNESCO
Board. Regardless, she makes major steps by drawing upon her instincts and
consciously paving her own way. "I consider my professional life as a long
staircase," she said. "I have been through every step. It was quite
amazing to accomplish this, because there has been perseverance. I put my head
down and took one step at a time. Then, it was over. This is a metaphor that
evokes the first experience of forming. Her birthplace was Venezuela but was
raised in France or Mexico. After two years, she made the decision to move to
Venezuela. In South America, her parents worked in education before moving the
family into a crowded apartment without plumbing and no elevators. To provide
water for the apartment, Patricia often carried heavy buckets up 15 steps. She
tried to assist her family in any way she could despite pursuing engineering
and intense dance classes. She was scouted to be a model in Milan and her
ascent to the top of the fashion ladder was contingent on a promise to her
loved ones. She recounts, "When they asked me about going to Italy and I
said, 'If you can send 30 bucks a month home to Venezuela, it will be worth it
since that will pay the entire building's water costs'." Patricia's
achievements were a major event in fashion as she brought attention to South America
for first time. In the wake of becoming "the first Karl Lagerfeld model
ever photographed" She went on to star in editorial spreads as well as
advertisements for the front of Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana. Her
appearances in Oprah's Supermodel of the World contest as well as Ford Models’
"Supermodel of the World" contest was a huge hit across the globe.
Also she was featured on the covers of Vogue, Bazaar, Marie Claire, and many
others.
