The birth of Ava DuVernay was on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, and theatre. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash from a home belonging to a jury member. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
